So, my brother sent me an email pointing to the TOR site which I of course thought to mean that there was news about the next WoT book. As it turns out, it sort of talks about it, but focuses more on the fact that Jordan could be dead within the next year.

Morbid, but we might have been correct when we said that the series may never end. Especially since he thinks it will take him another 30 years to write all the books he has in mind. |

Almost as tragic as RJ's rare disease is his absurd "I have 30 years worth of books to write" idea. In RJ terms, 30 years is probably equivalent to about 85 years and even if his disease goes into remission, I don't anticipate he'll live to be 142.
RJ's prognosis reminds me of Stephen King's car accident and his subsequent decision to finish the Dark Tower. After coming within inches of death himself, King vowed to finish the series before he died. He has even mused that it was the series itself and the will of millions of fans (who would never forgive him for leaving it unfinished) which kept him alive. And although the last few pages of DT were like one big kick in the crotch, he finished telling his story.
RJ could have finished WOT 3 books ago. He could have finished it last year. But instead, driven by some unknown motivation (money? vanity? stupidity?) he continued to stretch it out, even planning PREQUEL books prior to finishing the current story. You almost get the sense that he didn't know how to end the story and was procrastinating until his death.
If RJ doesn't make it through this upcoming treatment, it will be a shame. Not just that a man has died or that he didn't finish his series, but that his legacy is tarnished by 4 books (7 and beyond) that are ALL rising action and musings on braid tugging and bosoms with very little plot development. |
