Anybody work in a place that has/had a specialized QA staff?

Does specialized = special needs?  In that case, yes.  Otherwise, no.

Wow, very useful, Alex.

We have a single QA person here.  She basically reviews the requirements doc & generates manual test cases, which she then tests herself.  It's not a very sophisticated system, but it definitely catches a lot of bugs.

And there are people who would want to do that for a living?

Isn't there any sophisticated software or systems or methods that assist them with this process?

If I built that software, I would call it "assistiant"

We do have a test group, but that is not their only role.  They are developers who manage testing.  Each develop comes up with test plans for their own software, then the testing manager orgnizes other developers to test the applications and provide feedback.  Then the developer correctes issues and starts over with the testing if necessary.  That way many people can participate all with various knowledge of development and the systems.  Each person has an area to focus on too.  Like security, 508, usability, etc.

In an ideal world you would setup unit testing and the like.  I have yet to work somewhere that has anything more than developer-testers.

Really, Alex? I would have thought you'd suggest something along the lines of TestEase.

So nate, have you copywritten that name yet?  If not, and you don't mind....

Yes, yes I did.... (rushes to dotster.com). Testease.org, .it and .info all seem hilarious to me...and .com is being squatted.

As far as QA positions go though, I'd always thought that you'd need a huge amount of outgoing work to justify just one or two testers but after some internal discussion here I was pleasantly surprised to hear other peoples ideas which really helped to shape my idea of what could be done in that position to keep a single resource fully utilized for just one or two concurrent projects. Now, the only problem I see with hiring a full time test plan writer, tester and implementer is finding someone who has a desire to do nothing but just that. However, if there are people that want to be project managers, then I guess there are people out there who find testing to be their calling.
