I've always been mystified by television "ratings" -- both with how they are collected and with how much weight they carry. How do ratings companies ensure that their data collection boxes are collecting from a statistically viable subset of the population? It seems that FOX had bad data when it cancelled Family Guy and instead relied on DVD sales to indicate the show's true popularity.
Arbitron is working on a "Personal People Monitor," which is intended to collect data from all media sources you're exposed to. The idea sounds great in theory...but it seems like it faces a lot of the same challenges that current collection boxes face.

| I will take full credit for the message that was posted by this ever famous, smug character known as "JER" that was posted on 1/18/2006. Jerry doubted that this concept was even possible and seemed outrageous. Read it and weep jerry, hahahaha. |
