0312873077.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpgI really don't consider myself a Fantasy fan, but there are two series stringing me along right now.  October 11 brings us Book 11 of The Wheel of Time and on November 8 we'll finally see book 4 of A Song of Ice and Fire.  What is everyone reading these days?  TWOT lost its focus ages ago and ASOIAF is brilliant but it's been 3 years since the last book...  I've heard that the Sword of Truth series is good but I read Wizard's First Rule and thought it was a bit too young adult-ish.  Is Harry Potter in the same league as Jordan/Martin or is that also a kids' series?

I would not have read any of the Harry Potter books if my step-sister (who was extremely into HP) hadn't put the book in my hand and told me how much she liked it and thought I should read it. Sure, it started out like a young adult book but I was quickly hooked. Book two is still a bit kiddish but by book three it takes a turn for the adult. I'd recommend the series as the author has a Jordan-ish ability to pull you into the story in such a way that you can't put the books down. Try it from the library if you're still hesitant.

Haha, actually both those books will be on it.  I read the ice and Fire craps this summer.  So much better than wheel of nerds.

Ice And Fire is definitely better, at least at this point.  As a reader, it's clear that Martin has no fear of killing main characters or introducing drastic changes to their status or lifestyle.  In The Wheel of Time, there are about 234 characters to follow and nothing has happened to them in 4 books or so -- even Siuan Sanche has her own chapters!  And after 10 books, Nynaeve still loves tugging that braid, Rand is still going mad, Mazrim Taim is still in disguise...
