| The NHL hockey season has been officially canceled! Now this would probably never happen, but I'd love to see a couple of rich entrepeneurs hijack the whole league and start fresh. And I'm sure Canadians would appreciate it if most of the teams were created where they belong, in Canada -- no more of this Tampa Bay hockey... |

Clearly you haven't been following too closely, though I do agree about
Tampa Bay as a simptom of a league that tries to expand too quickly.
The NHL has been bleeding money, and this year was an owner lock-out,
so salaries were paid anyway...
Just because your beloved baseball never has labor disputes, you have
to take cracks at my beloved hockey. *sniff* *sniff*

| Man, I think every major professional sport needs a reset button to be hit. I want players to get a max of about $150,000 for what they do. I want tickets to be $5 again for baseball and maybe $25 for football... for the best seats. I love the stories I hear about baseball in the 1930's and 1940's, I love hearing them so much I almost wish I could have been alive to experience it (except there would be no internet). The best I have ever heard is from Brooklyn in about 1942 or 43. The fans would take the subway to the games, and they would all be dressed nicely and would get to the park well before the game, three hours sometimes, just to see batting practice and meet their favorite players. These fans would often see the same players that they were going to cheer for riding the train to the park. These same players made roughly the same salary as the guy going to watch them. It made everything much more level, much more real. Why are professional atheletes put on a pedestal now? Most have not even done anything extrordiniary in their life, most have simply had the good fortune to have the right combination of genetics, training, dedication, and being in the right place at the right time to parle that into a professional career playing a game. |
