Just one more reason Cleveland has to be the saddest sports town...
The Boston Red Sox won the World Series. The 1918 curse is over, they've finally done it. Being a Tribe fan, I am obligated to hate the Red Sox, but I do hate the Yankees so much more, oh so much more. To see the Yankees be within only a few outs of yet another Series appearance, only to watch it slip away was so very satisfying. So satisfying to the point that for a very short period of time I became a rabid Red Sox fan, my heart pounding through each extra inning game during their "will they or won't they" ALCS. Then to see the World Series end in such a huge fashion, a 4 game sweep, almost to say to all of Boston "SHUT UP ABOUT YOUR CURSE!" In fact it is true, curse or not, it is over, the Red Sox have won the series, now onto the next adventure.
So the Chicago Cubs last won the series in 1908, and I have a feeling that they may win it in under 100 years from their last victory, and many make a lot of noise about that drought because it is so painful, but nobody mentions their cross town rivals. When is the last time you heard about the cursed White Sox? They last won the series in 1917, one year longer than the Red Sox. The Cubs hold the crown for longest drought, but the team in the very same city is second! Who knew?!?! So the White Sox and Cubs, if both win the Series in the next few years, then who? Who has the longest drought since last winning the big one?
Yep, you guessed it, the Cleveland Indians. We have our curse too, but nobody seems to care. Two words folks, Rocky Colavito. He was not a super-hero player, but he was what our city had in the 50's. Rocco Colavito, the Hard working Italian in a hard working steel town. He once hit 4 home runs in one game you know? Well, Rocky was traded away, and has since caused great havoc with the fans of his very own hard working town. He was traded to Detroit, and even though Cleveland realized their mistake, it took too long to get him back. The damage was done, the curse was applied, and has since not been lifted. There has been superstar rookies fall flat one year later. Promising seasons ended when half of the pitching for a season was killed in a training camp boating accident. Playoff losses to the Red Sox, and a series loss to the Braves, and to top it all off, being two outs away from a game 7 Series victory against the expansion Marlins, only to lose when Jose Mesa fell off the table, their star closer coming apart at the seams during the most importance appearance of his career. SI picked the Indians to win it all with Julio Franco and Brook Jacoby in 1984... they lost over 100 games that season.
So Cleveland, get your voices ready to whine, you have just two more teams ahead of us before we have the longest world series drought, and it looks like it may be only one team after next season... GO CUBS!!! |

| Alex, you have some support. On Wednesday, one of the guys at ESPN's Page 2 speculated that if the Red Sox won, the Indians would be the new most cursed baseball team on the grounds that a) the 1919 White Sox threw the World Series, so they're hosed for good and b) the Cubs fans are there more for the social atmosphere than the baseball. |

If anyone (Jerry) wants a good read about the tortous fate of being an Indians fan, be sure to read The Curse of Rocky Colavito. You can buy if from Amazon or just borrow it from me.
Also, incidentally, The Indians were in the world series in 1954 prior to their 1990's success. They were swept by the San Francisco (Then New York) Baseball Giants in 4 games, during which Willie Mays made his amazing over the shoulder catch and throw back in (Bob Feller contends that he knew Willie was going to catch the ball, and that he would intentionally get a late break on the ball to make his play look more spectacular, but Feller is also an avid Racist who didn't want "Coloreds in the league" in the 1940's.). The Giants are next in line after the Indians for World Series droughts.
And just one more fact, in 1948 the Indians won their last crown, against another Boston Team, the Braves, who the Indians later lost to in 1995 as the Atlanta team. |

"training camp boating accident"
Hrm. Is training camp where the parents of professional baseball players send their kids for the summer? I thought it was where they trained...for baseball and not boating. |
