08/29/08 03:13 PM EST Blogs Schmogs I could not agree more with the comments on this board. I commend Microsoft for their progress with development tools, C# and Visual Studio are awesome and get better with each version. I've been developing for 15 years and struggled through the DLL hell era with VB, C++ and almost killed myself. Then came C# and Visual Studio 2003. Got better w/ VS2005 and almost Nirvana w/ VS 2008 (minus some SSRS quirks). Ahh, this is how it should be. Now enter SharePoint. Holy ****, Mike

08/11/08 02:10 PM EST Generation Kill There is a mini series that is currently airing on HBO called 'Generation Kill' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0995832/ This is a great series thus far, and I highly recommend it. The story feels very realistic, action is great, and dialogue/personalities are about spot on according to various military friends of mine.  But beyond all of that, I want to post here just to point out the best character in the show.  The Iraqi translator who is in the Marines' unit.  I think alex
08/11/08 01:36 PM EST Acting Resume, Recovery Music and Football Is it too much to ask that the resume site work properly in Firefox? :) (p.s. - I can't remember my login) DougM
07/26/08 08:36 AM EST All Your Pork & Beans Are Belong To Us I am totally late to the party, but... This video is awesome. I think the coolest thing to note is the fact that all of the participants are the actual people in the youtube videos, I'm pretty sute the fat kid is actually the Star Wars Kid. It is too bad they didn't actually get Tron Guy to do anything. Southpark (I trust you've already seen it) had a great episode earlier this year doing the same. alex
07/23/08 03:15 PM EST I love Southpark!!! Protect My Balls!!! abdurahiman
05/27/08 07:10 PM EST Optimizing a Web site for Google's crawler Thanks for the feedback, Doug.  I've noticed that the crawler is definitely ignoring my redundant content.  I think I'm going to have to strike a compromise: one thorough listing of cities & services accompanied by city pages that list only a few services. JER
05/27/08 07:07 PM EST All Your Pork & Beans Are Belong To Us I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Weezer's videos are derivative, too.  Still, BNL sucks. JER

05/24/08 02:16 PM EST Optimizing a Web site for Google's crawler If it's similar content, you may be ok, but if it's duplicate content (or large portions are), then yes, there are specific penalties for it, namely whatever is deemed the authoritative content gets the higher rank and the rest get duplicate content penalties (or not indexed on a low-pr site). The other issue at hand is how new is that site or domain or the content. With a low page rank or new domain, Google will not index aggressively at all. The best way to get those pages indexed Doug1
05/23/08 09:27 PM EST All Your Pork & Beans Are Belong To Us And I am going to have to agree with someone's comment I saw on Facebook, BNL did this already and did a better job (as long as better job means they gave credits so you can figure out the references): Blearns
05/23/08 08:48 PM EST All Your Pork & Beans Are Belong To Us Oh wait, you got the Britney loving kid, I don't know this blonde wig, red shoe worshiping reference... Blearns
05/23/08 08:29 PM EST All Your Pork & Beans Are Belong To Us Much more fun: Blearns
05/23/08 08:27 PM EST All Your Pork & Beans Are Belong To Us A bit of a potty mouth: Blearns
05/23/08 05:05 PM EST All Your Pork & Beans Are Belong To Us Weezer's new video was just posted to YouTube. It incorporates just about every geek joke or viral internet video of the past 8 years, including 'All Your Base Are Belong To Us' and 'Chocolate Rain.' Worth a viewing, even though it includes that creep Britney kid...While I recognized a lot of it, a few references were lost on me -- who's the fat kid singing at his desk?  How about the scary guy in a blonde wig? JER
05/20/08 09:33 PM EST Optimizing a Web site for Google's crawler I'm doing a little experimentation tonight.  No, still not gay, just trying to optimize a Web site for Google's crawler. For example, I want to make it easy for people in Annandale, VA to find Sherlock's Pest Control.  I created a service areas page that lists each of the cities & zip codes that they serve.  Each service area links then to a page explaining the services offered in that area. This technique has resulted in a few clickthroughs from very JER
05/13/08 09:18 AM EST No rest for the talentless Talentless SNL alum to get his own showNo, not Jay Mohr.  There's a rumor floating around that Jimmy Fallon is on the 'short list' to replace Conan O'Brien when O'Brien takes over the Tonight Show. This deal is a no brainer, really, as NBC will be able to streamline and simplify the show, saving some serious cash:1) Fallon will be so busy giggling at his own jokes, they won't need a studio audience, just a desk and a backdrop.2) They can save on mirrors for the dressing room JER
05/12/08 10:13 AM EST Request for comment: Shiny RSS feeds Ah, there were no updates because the server security settings would constantly change, so my RSS writer never triggered because Network Service had no rights to the directory.  That's yet another reason I switched to self hosting. JER
05/08/08 06:31 PM EST Request for comment: Shiny RSS feeds I just didn't receive any updates on my Google Reader for months, but there were a few new posts or comments. Also the 'dc:creator' element doesn't seem to support HTML in Google Reader so it's a bit messed up. Blearns
05/08/08 04:23 PM EST Request for comment: Shiny RSS feeds I guess I was subscribed to XML II feed, which has comments. Is that the standard for a comments feed? I have really not messed with comments feeds before. And wasn't aware I was subscribed to the feed with comments when I subscribed, and was slightly annoyed at getting all those Lindsay Lohan comments when no real posts were happening :-oBut it seems to work fine for me in Bloglines as far as no dupes, etc. Doug1
05/08/08 03:46 PM EST Request for comment: Shiny RSS feeds I haven't seen any RSS issues...I seem to remember the original RSS complaints being that 1.) there was no comments feed and 2.) once there was a comments feed, that the original post wasn't included in the comments feed. Everything seems fine now. nate
05/08/08 12:01 PM EST Request for comment: Shiny RSS feeds Blearns is always ragging on this site's RSS feeds.  Is there a standard syntax that I'm not following for maximum compatibility?  Perhaps there's a tag that's missing or incorrect?  Google Reader handles the feeds just fine and I never get duplicate articles (A List Apart) or a broken feed (Sports Pickle). For your consideration, here's a typical item from my feed:<item>      <title>Stop the Clocks Chords and Lyrics</title> &nbs JER
05/07/08 09:09 PM EST Stop the Clocks Chords and Lyrics A demo of Stop the Clocks, the most over-hyped unreleased Oasis song of the last 6+ years, has finally leaked.  It's my birthday and Christmas all in one!On first listen, I like it but can see why it wasn't the lead track of their greatest hits album of the same name.  Stop the Clocks is a meditation, reminiscent of the Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows and follows a form Noel has used occasionally since Standing on the Shoulder of Giants.  This has led to such JER
05/06/08 08:48 PM EST Smell like the wolfman Isn't that the feral French Pierce Brosnan? Blearns
05/06/08 08:47 PM EST Site redesign coming soon I'd just like RSS feeds that work... Blearns
05/06/08 09:41 AM EST Smell like the wolfman I guess this is supposed to be sexy, but 'I'll bet he smells nice' isn't the first thing that comes to mind when I see this guy. If anything, I'd imagine he needs a bath (or some spare change). JER
