I am slowing becoming Kearns. I've been drooling over an iPhone for the past few months but am appalled by the battery life and storage capacity. That got me thinking that the iPod video might not be so bad, but it has no touch screen. Now I've found the Archos 604 Wifi, which looks like the ultimate compromise of size & performance (I want touchscreen but I wish it had a clickwheel!!). Before I mortgage my house to buy one of these things, though, I need some sagelike advice. What's my best option if I want max storage, widescreen video & music playback.

I first heard of "Ryan Adams" (no, that's not a typo -- this is not the Canadian pop star) in 2002 while searching the 'net for "oasis" and "cover." I found an mp3 of him performing a live version of Wonderwall and at the time, thought it was just "ok." It reminded me of Howie Day, but I didn't consider it anything spectacular. Soon after th, Noel Gallagher announced that after a 4 year break, Wonderwall was returning to Oasis' live set. Why, do you ask, was Oasis bringing this song back after so long? Apparently, Noel was inspired by the Ryan Adams' cover version on the double-disc album, Love Is Hell. On Noel's recommendation alone, I rushed out and bought Love Is Hell. I gave it a few listens, ripped Wonderwall to my iPod, then put it on the shelf. A while later, I bought Adams' album Rock'n'Roll based on several positive reviews. Again, I liked it, but it didn't hold my attention.
In 2005, though, Ryan Adams (& The Cardinals) released THREE studio albums -- the sheer moxie of such an effort caught my ear yet again, and this time was the charm. If mp3s had grooves or flimsy black tape, my copies of Jacksonville City Nights and Cold Roses would have been worn out years ago.
In any event, I checked out his website tonight to see if he has any tour dates or new albums coming out. The main theme playing when you visit the site is an original tune about, what else -- visiting ryan-adams.com...
After navigating through the bizarre dashboard, I came across THIRTEEN new online albums under various aliases and genres. They were just released this December and most of these songs are very short -- but again, the sheer volume and quality of the work he's putting out is worth a listen. If you can navigate your way through the site, I highly recommend listening to "The ****"'s 5 star LP, "Hillbilly Joel." Half of the tracks start with the word "Drunk" and there's even a song about Billy Joel wrecking his car. Genius...

I've been DEVELOPING with Sharepoint for a YEAR now. IT SUCKS, IT SUCKS, IT SUCKS....Try developing a web part and installing it in a Server Farm. Try moving configured lists from DEV to Production by creating Templates. Try customizing List Views for Paging. I have been a Microsoft Developer for about 8 years. I LOVE ASP.NET, C# and SQL Server. If you are a small mom and pop shop and just need UNSTRUCTURED data, like Contacts or an Issue Tracker, Sharepoint is fine. If you have a complex application with RELATIONAL DATA and COMPLEX OBJECTS, DO NOTNOTNOTNOTNOT put the DATA in Sharepoint. If you want to build Web Parts to hit a SQL Server, that is fine. If you want to build Web Parts that hit custom pages on a web application somewhere else, okay. They're may be security issues, but you can work around it(web services). But PLEASE don't try to build a COMPLETE Application that needs ANY TYPE OF Data Constraints/Foreign Keys, etc into SHAREPOINT. You will cry until you cut yourself. My users keep asking for certain functionality, and I say to myself, if I was using a Datagrid in ASP.NET, I could give that to them easily, but the Consultant I am working with just says, NO, because we are working with OOB Sharepoint. YES, we are customizing some Edit or NewItem Forms to put SOME custom Business Logic in, but overall, this whole app is ONE GIANT HACK. I will put Sharepoint on my Resume so people will know that I did some work this year, but if they want to hire me to build web parts, I will get up, and walk out of the interview.
take that to the bank.
