Politics Pray For Mexico

Candidates wrapped up campaigning today in Mexico's presidential election.  According to the AP, there is quite a bit at stake:

"The election will determine whether Mexico joins Latin America's rising tide of charismatic leftist leaders or continues on a path of fiscal conservatism..."

Is this sentence actually implying that there is a conceptual dichotomy between "charismatic leftist leaders" and "fiscal conservatism?"  If so, wouldn't the second concept be better described as "odious fiscal conservatism" or "gag-inducing fiscal conservatism?"

.NET AJAX = snake oil?

Government Computer News has a skeptical commentary on AJAX.  I assume that the following quote is sarcastic:

"And it has the best of both worlds: the bloated, cranky code of client-server, with all of the stability, performance, and security of the Web. I can see what the attraction is."

I must admit, as much as I like the Google apps and the MSDN dynamic tree, the idea of AJAX becoming a preferred programming pattern is scary.  In its current state, any AJAX programming is inherently messy due to the intentional limitations of HTML, XML and Javascript.  There are a few nice libraries out there that make coding easier, but I'm still not sold on the stability / cost-benefit of this stuff.  I think it's great that developers are pushing the envelope and finding interesting new ways to enhance the user experience, but the golden goose is a long way off...

works fine on linux. This is obviously Windows x64, on 64 bit chip.

Thanks for all you help.
