Rockin' for Reagan

Just in time for the GOP convention, some alt rockers are out to spread the message that Ronald Reagan Rocks! Do you dare to listen? Here are a few sample lyrics:
Verse 1
She had hair under her arms
And hair on both her legs
And her hate for you was never-ending
She was socially aware, yes
And I really couldn't care less
But her chest kept me pretending
She always said that she wished you were dead
And I nodded so she'd shut up and hop into bed
But that's the part that I'm sorry for now
Because I love you more than I loved her anyhow
Chorus
Ronald Reagan
Please forgive me
Too dumb to see
What you were trying to give me
Ronald Reagan
You showed me this land's mine
They said you were living
In your own B-movie
But when the Wall fell
That's not what it looked like to me
Ronald Reagan
You showed me this land's fine

It is interesting to me how my SharpReader list is growing. I find someone I respect and read a bunch of their archived blogs, looking for nuggets of truth or just something neat and it invariably leads me to the blog of another person that has something interesting to offer. With that said, here is a blog post by Roman Rehak that links to his article from SQL Server Magazine on some SQL Tips and Tricks to speed up SQL Server. This seems to be an important topic around here so I thought I would share the wealth. :)

VSS & Visual Studio - Easily customizing your local settings

Argh, I wish I'd known about this sooner!!! Apparently you can have user-specific settings in a user.config file that overrides other config files!!
From MSDN's Team Development with VSS & Visual Studio:
To use a user configuration file to store database connection strings
Add a file="user.config" attribute to the
appSettings element of your main application
configuration file and include a default
connection string in the main configuration file.
This is used in the absence of any user-specific
override.
<configuration>
<appSettings file="user.config">
<add key="DBConnStr"
value="server=PRODDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;database=Accounts"/>
</appSettings>
</configuration>
To override the main application configuration
file, create a User.config file (located in the
same folder as the application configuration
file), and then add a similar appSettings entry
to the file. Notice that the following
connection string references a local database.
<appSettings>
<add key="DBConnStr"
value="server=(local);Integrated Security=SSPI;database=Accounts"/>
</appSettings>

64 Bit .NET Code: Performance?

I am sure we all understand the concept of 64 bit vs. 32 bit code: so let's not rehash it here. In theory, intensive CPU and Memory apps (like the one Jerry writes, every day) should see a big benefit from 64 bit code (big being <30%). In the C/C++ world, 64 bit code generally gives you a 25% increase (as is the case for MySQL).
But is this true for .NET? No one seems to know: am I the only one who uses BETA versions of the .NET framework? Surely not. Yet, the microsoft groups seem pretty weak.
Is anyone ready to migrate to 64 bit? Does anyone care? Thoughts?

The "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" are after Kerry bigtime and the Senator has asked just about everyone to denounce their attacks. What they're saying hasn't been proven correct so far, so I tend to agree with Kerry on this one.
What is SOOO hypocritical, though, is Kerry's reaction to this controversy. He had the gall to file a complaint with the Federal Election Commission alleging that the Swifties & Bush are working together. And even more absurd, Kerry is accusing Bush of hiding behind front groups.
Please take a moment to stutter and gawk at the screen, because I certainly need a moment myself.
...$#&**&$&$#...%#&$&$#$&... Okay, all better.
If you weren't sputtering and gesturing wildly just now, you haven't heard of MoveOn.org, Michael Moore & the 527 front groups of the Left (or you're intellectually dishonest). For the past year they have been spewing proven lies and alleging that Bush was AWOL during his service time. So after 12 months of mudslinging and questioning Bush's military service, ONE 527 group from the right challenges Kerry's military service and he flips out??? Not only is that ridiculous, but of all people, these vets seem to be the one group that SHOULD be able to challenge his record. They were there!!!
Well, I'm going to start rambling now, so I'm signing off. But someone tell Kerry to get off the hypocrisy train. He can challenge the SBVFT and say that they're lying, but this holier-than-thou stuff is just silly. |

Slashdot's first link today is an interview with Jakob Nielsen, the so-called "usability guru." For whatever reason, people are still listening to him.
In 1998 he was somewhat relevant. In 2000 he became "old school" but I still felt his suggestions had their place. But take a look at his site today -- how can someone with a site this obtuse be a respected usability expert? Where are my eyes supposed to go when I visit this site? To the ONE graphic on the whole page (a "new" icon)? Or to the blue links on a teal background eyesore??
I'm starting a campaign to buy Jakob a license for Adobe Photoshop. Click here to read all about it! |

The REPLACE statement
[reply]

MySQL provides an INSERT-esque command called "REPLACE." It has the same syntax as INSERT with one difference: if the referenced primary key already exists, REPLACE removes the first record and replaces it with the new one.
When I first heard about this, I was very excited. "All of my "add new" and "edit" pages can run the same SQL!!" I thought. I then realized that auto-generated keys & REPLACE don't work in tandem. To make good use of this command, your key has to be generated outside of SQL, which I wasn't prepared to do.
However, after a year of working with MySQL, I finally found a use for REPLACE. I'm screen-scraping 100s of error code pages off of MSDN and adding them to a database. Several of the pages have mistakes (duplicate entries for several of the error keys) so my INSERT commands are blowing up. By simply replacing "INSERT" with "REPLACE" I was able to just overwrite any previous record. |

So I hate the Group By clause. I mean, I really hate it. It is stupid and slow and I don't like to use it (and rarely do).
It serves the purpose of grouping results when doing aggregate functions within your select really well. When I need this feature of SQL it is a great thing, but the Group By clause is overused in a kludgy and stupid fashion for which it wasn't intended. Not to mention poorly named to make people think it is supposed to work this way.
I have a query right now that basically returns parent rows and children rows. I want to order alphabetically by name but I also want to make sure the children appear under their parent. In order to do this and maintain the parent alpha ordering I would assume that by its name I can have an order by that specifies the name field, and a Group By that specifies the parent ID, and this grouping would override the ordering. But that isn't how Group By works, and it shouldn't. SQL Should provide, and perhaps does, a better ordering technique that will allow what I am talking about here. Maybe a nested hierarchical ordering structure when needed. Any advice?

George W. Bush attends UNITY, meets Shiny D staff

I just got back from the "UNITY: Journalists of Color" convention where President George W. Bush gave a 30 minute speech & fielded some questions from the UNITY panel. I expected the prepared speech to be the highlight and the Q & A to be rough but it was quite the opposite.
During his speech, the crowd seemed somewhat disinterested and, unlike Kerry's speech, they rarely applauded. Of course, Bush's speech wasn't peppered with references to "Bush lied", "Florida should be allowed to vote", etc. so I'm hardly surprised.
The Speech
Bush spent about half an hour discussing the progress he'd made during his first administration. He highlighted education reform, Medicare prescription drugs and the need for diversity in news media. In the same way that Kerry's speech came off a bit conservative, Bush's speech seemed liberal (aside from the killing terrorists part). Only in an election year...
The Q & A
President Bush was asked 8 questions in total, here are a few highlights. Bush was asked if he believed in Affirmative Action in college admissions and he replied, "I believe in schools affirmatively taking action." I'm not sure if that's funny out of context, but his little smirk and the sheer silliness of that answer had the crowd in stitches for a while -- he then elaborated a bit, but his point was made. That question was followed up by a question of "legacy" admissions, which allow children of alumni preferred admission. Bush said that he did not think legacy admission was a fair practice and did not think it should continue. This was amazing coming from a man who got into Yale due to legacy admissione -- but I admire that he has finally taken a position on the issue.
One strange moment came when a Native American asked what Bush thought about the best ways to protect the sovereignty of Indian Tribal communities. Bush responded by using the word "sovereign" about 400 times and said things like "Those communities are sovereign, this government is sovereign, two sovereign entities should be able to work together...um, Sovereign McSovereignty Sovereignstein." It was really difficult to tell if Bush was giving an incredibly simple, non-spun or if he just didn't know enough about the topic to formulate a detailed response. From the expression on his face (the "y'know what I'm talkin' about" look), it really could have been either.
After the Q & A, Bush came down from the stage and shook hands with the crowd. Both Michelle & I got a chance to say hello and shake his hand, which was really exciting.
Comparing the Candidates
Despite his unorthodox speaking style, Bush was so much more likeable than Kerry. By the end of the speech, even the press was eating out of his hand -- it was something to see. Another thing that struck me about both men is that in person, they looked confident, engaging and in control. But on the huge TV monitors, Kerry looked bored and stiff while Bush looked twitchy and uncomfortable. From my view in the second row, the cameras simply did not do justice to either man, because they were both very impressive in person.
The Photos
The world is full of idiots and there were plenty outside the convention center. Anyone have any clue what the $*&$# that sign means?
Bush begins his speech very quietly, thanking everyone for the opportunity to be there and stressing the importance of a cordial relationship with the media.
Bush acknowledges ShinyDonkey.com and it's important contributions to the "Bull jokes" community...or he was discussing the War On Terror, it was one of those two.
President Bush shakes hands with Michelle Vignoli. Michelle's face is blocked, so mouse-over the picture to see which head she is.
Bush tells the woman next to me that he is committed to peace and does not want to be a "War President." This is about 5 seconds before I congratulated him on the speech and shook his hand.

John Kerry gave a speech at UNITY this morning and I was originally planning to cover it for this site as official press. My press credentials were bumped Tuesday night, though, due to a throng of press credential submissions and limited press passes. I'm told that my form was reviewed in confusion. Despite words on my behalf that this is "one of the leading liberal blogs on the net," they preferred to credential the Washington Post & CNN.
So once I made my way into the enormous meeting room (roughly the size of a football field), I watched the speech from about 30 rows back. Lack of press credentials turned out not to matter, though, because someone (Kerry's people?) decided that after his speech the candidate would not be fielding questions from reporters but would instead answer questions from representatives of NAHJ, NABJ and other UNITY members.
Kerry's speech was essentially a DNC '04 remix, peppered with references to "no red states, no blue states, just a red, white & blue America", "Voters don't like slogans" and "here are my 3 slogans: Help is on the way, a Stronger America, We can do better." He implied thatBush is a liar who rushed us to war, but, sadly, never went so far as saying "Bush can suck mah balls." I was really hoping to break that story.
The Q & A afterward was far more interesting, with Kerry fielding quesitons about whether the Democrats take minority votes for granted, how he would handle Iraq and what Bill Cosby's recent statements meant to him. Kerry handled them all with ease, giving predictable but valid responses.
Overall, Kerry did an excellent job - but he sounded like a Republican! He called for strong national defense, lower taxes, tighter border control... I really didn't know what to think.
Afterward, I turned to the girl next to me, a former news anchor for a Cheyenne, Wyoming CBS affiliate and mentioned that Kerry gave a very conservative speech. She agreed with that point and our conversation turned to the upcoming debates, because currently both candidates seem to agree on everything.
I'm curious to see how Bush will handle Kerry, or vice versa, but she was really looking forward to Cheney v. Edwards. I commented that Cheney, who has a very strong grasp on the issues, is going to crush Edwards. I should have realized that being from Wyoming, Cheney's home state, she would agree, as the next five minutes were spent railing on Edwards' fluff & lauding Cheney's brilliance.
Then I left and came to work. Tomorrow I'll get a chance to see GW himself and will have the full report.

Apparently this lady was sacked for eating pork in a Muslim owned company. The thing I find the most absurd about this is the fact that it is a "rule" in the company that pork not be brought onto premises, so she was fired. I do not find the rule absurd, maybe crappy or even stupid in my opinion but fine, it is a "rule" in a company that only hires and catters to Muslims so I can understand it... wait a second, you mean it isn't actually written anywhere and she signed nothing agreeing to this rule, and the company states they do not discriminate based on religion and have an open environment workplace? Doesn't sound like a rule to me, it just sounds more like a wrongful discrimination lawsuit sure thing. |

Does anyone else remember Sledge Hammer!, a comedy/cop drama from the mid-80s? It lasted all of 2 seasons and (like Family Guy) was always getting shuffled around in the schedule. When I was younger, this and Hunter are the two shows I'd always beg to watch, though I usually wasn't allowed to because of all the guns.
The show centers around Sledge, a cop who plays by his own rules and talks to his gun like it's a person. David Rasche is fantastic in this role. He brings just the right blend of tough guy/idiot/right-wing-extremism that somehow makes the character so likeable.
They've just released the complete Season One DVD set and so far I've watched the first 5 episodes, which have more than met my expectations. And 22 episodes for $29 bucks made it worth taking the risk. |

My [insert derogatory adjective] liberal girlfriend and I often get into political discussions. I would basically put my political views at a "I dunno" level. Meaning I don't really ally myself with one party over another.
She knows this, and today emailed me a link to
http://www.selectsmart.com/president/. I think everyone (particularly the highly political individuals here) should take it. It's clearly not that scientific and prone to not giving all the appropriate answers or covering all the issues, but it is interesting nonetheless. For the record, here are my results:
1. Your ideal theoretical candidate. (100%)
2. Cobb, David - Green Party (60%)
3. Nader, Ralph - Independent (60%)
4. Badnarik, Michael - Libertarian (58%)
5. Brown, Walt - Socialist Party (56%)
6. Dean, Gov. Howard, VT - Democrat (53%)
7. Edwards, Senator John, NC - Democrat (52%)
8. Gephardt, Rep. Dick, MO - Democrat (52%)
9. Sharpton, Reverend Al - Democrat (51%)
10. Kerry, Senator John, MA - Democrat (50%)
11. Kucinich, Rep. Dennis, OH - Democrat (48%)
12. Clark, Retired General Wesley K., AR - Democrat (46%)
13. Moseley-Braun, Former Senator Carol, IL - Democrat (43%)
14. Bush, President George W. - Republican (37%)
15. Lieberman, Senator Joe, CT - Democrat (34%)
16. LaRouche, Lyndon H. Jr. - Democrat (26%)
17. Peroutka, Michael - Constitution Party (25%)
18. Hagelin, Dr. John - Natural Law (2%)
The results pretty surprising. However, if you look at the information for "Your ideal theoretical candidate" it says, "If your top candidate scores in the 90’s or above, you’ll be delighted; the 80’s, you’ll be very pleased; the 70’s, you’ll be satisfied; the 60’s, you’ll find many points of agreement but some differences too with this candidate's positions. If your top score is in the 50’s, your top candidate is the "lesser of evils". If your top candidate did not get at least 50%, then all we can say is that you have a unique combination of political views. ". Essentially, there is not a candidate suitable for me. The highest score (David Cobb, Green Party) is at 60%... Hardly a commendable match. |

I've always admired actor James Woods and, admittedly, it's probably related to his politics (Woods is one of the handful of outspoken Republicans in Hollywood). I was reading an article on National Review yesterday, though, where it was casually mentioned that Woods was on a flight with 4 of the hijackers in August of 2001. Is this common knowledge!? After a little research, I came across this transcript from an O'Reilly Factor in February 2002 where Woods explains exactly what happened.
Basically, Woods was on a flight in August 2001 with 4 luggage-less Arab men & thought they seemed a bit off. After watching them for a bit, he decided that their behavior was so bizarre, they were either undercover agents or terrorists and reported his concern to the FAA. What kind of sensitivy do you have to have to do this? Truly amazing. But I'm not surprised in the slightest that no action was taken.
Our culture frowns upon what James Woods did. That is, it is politically incorrect to assume that all Arabs are terrorists, and rightly so. But the unfortunate consequence is that most of us tend to overcompensate for this bias, and would probably have tried to explain away any odd behavior as "just a problem with my perception, not a problem with them."
Would an ultra-liberal like Tim Robbins have noticed that there was anything peculiar about those men? Probably. But would he have done anything? Of course not. |
