I ran a search at the old company's website for the word "lame" and didn't find any matches. I think the search engine is broken.
ZING!!!
(Kearns & Gruska, I'm pre-empting "You mean you didn't find your old bio" or similar comebacks, so step away from the keyboard) |

I wanted to bind a business object to a repeater and was planning to implement an IListSource, IList, etc. class to handle the databinding via Reflection. Like all great ideas, someone beat me to it. They pretty much did it the way I'd intended but were far more thorough (and even used comments?!?!?)!
And I'm sure Kearns has already written 12 of these, but if you haven't seen it it's *$#& cool. |

| FYI - Shiny Donkey .com has moved into the #2 spot on google's search results for Shiny Donkey. |

| I'm thinking of adding a little "Sound off" feature to the BoTD section that would allow comments/blogging for each little drawing. Should it be a comment per each bull or just one long rambling list with a reference to the bull the comment is about. I like the second one only because it would probably generate more discussion, but the first one would certainly be more organized... |

This morning I passed a newstand and read a few lines of a Washington Post cover story discussing The All New Al Gore's bizarre speech. The headline and lead paragraph suggested that Washington insiders and top Kerry aides are now engaged in serious discussion over whether Kerry should be less cautious and take a more aggressive tone in his quest for the White House. Apparently Gore still has major influence in directing policy, albeit from afar.
All I can say is: Please, please, please, please do this, Mr. Kerry. Because clearly Gore's speech was a good idea (wink, wink) that resonated with middle America and not just a few non-voting, hemp-clad Deaniacs. Obviously this fiery new brand of rhetoric will be very pleasing to us all. Remember how we all rallied behind Howard Dean when he went nuts?
Kerry has made some mistakes in the past year, but I can't imagine a worse (or more entertaining) idea than unleashing "Angry John Kerry." |

Followup to corrupt Viewstate issue from before

Well, after yesterdays post and blatant direction of traffic to Nate's post on viewstate within his own blog, and after the discussion that ensued, I decided to rewrite my code to properly place the controls on the page using the override of AddParsedSubObject. After a bunch of tweaking, I was able to get it working and suddenly .NET worked as it was supposed to...
Now if you will remember a post from a little while ago dealing with Corrupt Viewstate in a clustered server environment? Well, it seems the suggested fixes in the post didn't work, and I still received errors every once in a while. Then it dawned on me, this corrupt viewstate issue is most likely due to the same issue we were discussing on "That other blog." I am willing to bet, with no substantial concrete evidence to back this claim up, that this error is occurring only after a form submission on a page that contained dropdown items that were being referenced from the code behind, and the submission ended up on the alternate server in the cluster. Basically, the typically acceptably corrupt viewstate that was being salvaged due to my strange rebinding of data to re-assimilate .NET with the form data that was being submitted simply could not work when this would happen on another server in the environment. Kind of a "straw that broke the .NET donkey's back" scenario I think. At any rate, I will be updating the live code soon enough to see if this takes care of the issues.
The site that it is on gets roughly 80,000 unique visitors daily, many of whom use the pages where this is happening. Since this only happens maybe 2-3 times per day if at all, it isn't a serious problem, but it is a problem that I want to get taken care of.

| If you've never heard of "Avenue Q", I'd recommend listening to some of these Avenue Q sound clips. It's a musical akin to Sesame Street but with themes targeted toward an older audience. It's worth the price alone for such gems as "The Internet is for Porn" & "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist." |

I saw this link on slashdot and had to post it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. There is actually a site dedicated to Dance Dance Revolution fitness enthusiasts, complete with testimonials & a "How To" guide showing the "dance pad" accessories for PS2, XBox, etc.
How would the world deal with a legion of svelt video game dorks emerging from their dank apartments? Since there's still no cure for internet porn, I'd say we're still safe for a few years. |

| While doing some .NET development at work last week or so, I ran into a neat little "problem". It's that I think I understand ViewState differently than it actually works. If you haven't yet taken a look at the post on my blog, take a shot at educating a poor .NET scrub. |

| Well, John Kerry was kind enough to speak with JohnnyF***up.com thinking it was a site about his amazing life and times. While the majority of the interview was Kerry talking about himself and his tour in Vietnam and about how Bush sucks and he rocks, he did say a thing or two about Bull. Since JohnnyF***up.com is in fact a site about Bull, that was the only part of the interview I was able to post, sorry. At any rate, go check it out, a JohnnyF***up.com exclusive. |

Has Kearns posted any info on who has actually contributed these things? I have a feeling that about 95% of them were created by Dari. |

Does anyone have any other "special promotion day" ideas? For instance, Friday could always feature Bull being severely injured or killed. |

For the past 32 hours I've been unable to edit web projects in Visual Studio 2003 .NET v1.1 on Windows XP. The exact error was "Unable to open Web project 'MyProject'. The file path 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\MyProject' does not correspond to the URL 'http://localhost/MyProject'. The two need to map to the same server location."
I've had that error before when I've changed the default web root or if a virtual directory hasn't been created. This time, however, I couldn't even create NEW web projects!!!
After much fiddling with Visual Studio & IIS, I finally opted out and handed it off to Jake. He was able to fix my problem by doing the following. It is unclear which steps were involved in actually fixing the problem, but by combining these steps, he got it working:
- Repairing Visual Studio installation from install disc (mostly registry changes, I believe).
- Reinstalling IIS.
- Reinstalling .NET Framework version 1.1.
- Re-registering .NET Framework with IIS via aspnet_regiis.exe

So I patiently waited out the rain delay last night and was rewarded with an excellent victory over our (I say our because I own one share of Indians stock) much hated division rival ChiSox. Somehow, and I don't know how, the tribe has won 5 straight to move withing 1 game of the magic .500 mark. A win tonight would move them within 1 game of 2nd place in the division! That being said, I fully expect the indians to now lose the next 15 straight, but what if is looming in my head... Right now we have a young winning pitcher, let's call him 20 Game Lee for now, a consistent 4 hole hitter, sure he's no cleanup crusher, but he gets the job done well enough to be an AL player of the week, and what seems like a quality mix of veteran and young players who is going to end up really clicking in the next few seasons if they aren't broken up by the lure of the deal and dollars. I think tonight's game will be a major test, Indians have a 3-3 starter with an 11.77!!!! ERA going against someone will an equal percentage but a much more manageable 3.97. If the tribe can get the bats hot early they should be in good shape but I highly doubt it will be a low scoring affair on the side of the Sox. My prediction is that it will either be a punch for punch fight into extra innings, or a complete one sided blowout with the tribe on the losing end.
Also, I was watching baseball tonight last night after the win and someone said "The Indians are just too streaky." WTF does that mean? Everyone in baseball is streaky! The streaks are long and short, but all are streaks none the less. The whole game is built on streaks. I hope the tribe becomes even more streaky, just keep the streaks on the positive side. Isn't the team that wins 110 games on a year really streaky? They just have a very long winning streak between each loss. |

I was working on an ASP.NET page to manage an XML config file and it struck me that there is surely a very smart, recommended way of doing this. I was loading the file into a "System.Xml.XmlDocument" object, traversing the child nodes to make my changes, and then saving the file back to disk.
My gut tells me I was overcomplicating the problem and that even Rob knows of a more elegant solution. Does anyone have a good reference or a few comments on how this could be done with XSLT, a proxy class, etc.? |

Be sure to check out the new Character Bios section for a brief introduction to Shiny Donkey's myriad of Bull-related characters.
And if you hate Bull of the Day (Kearns), there's still Jimmy & Alex to keep you smilin'.
Sound clips for all characters will be coming just as soon as I can schedule some voice talent for a recording.
And if you haven't noticed, yesterday I casually released 3 new bulls, including Nate's special request, THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL BULL EVER. |

| I am working on an application running on clustered servers and occasionally receive a "The View State is invalid for this page and might be corrupted." error. The Machine Keys in the Machine.Config file were generated and are the same as this problem was happening before. This corrected the issue on the last application, but for some reason it has come back up. It is intermitent, which is the worse thing. Any suggestions on fixes or the way to troubleshoot? |

Friday afternoon after I left work, one of the guys in the office noticed a red flashing light on his Dell D600 Latitude laptop's battery indicator. It blinks 4 times, turns green, then restarts the cycle. I worked on my laptop all weekend without incident, but when I came in Monday morning, I noticed the exact same thing shortly after plugging in. Now the moment I unplug A/C power, my laptop dies. If I take my machine home, where I was able to use the battery all weekend, the blinking light is still there.
While its remotely possible that both of our laptops, purchased months apart, died within 2 days of each other, it seems more likely that there is a new patch or automatic rollout that #$&$ed our machines. Does anyone know the slightest thing about how I might fix this??? Or a strategy for tracking recent changes?
I searched DELL's message boards and found someone complaining that a new BIOS rollout caused this to happen to his laptop, but my BIOS seems unchanged. |

Here he provides a piece set in the past, imagining how the media would have reacted if our security measures had actually worked on September 11. Sadly, nothing about this story seems fictional. |

I was trying to get weather information from the Washington Post and was greeted by one of those "Please register before viewing this page" messages on washingtonpost.com, so I started typing random usernames & passwords to see if I could bypass registration. First, I tried username "test@test.com" w/ 2 passwords "password" and "test"; neither worked. However, my third try of "foobar@foobar.com" password "foobar" gave me the message "Welcome, foobar" and let me right in.
The only drawback is that now I can't get the Post's marketing materials by e-mail, postal mail or phone. |

I'm shocked that this person could talk about somebody who gave their life to serve the country. It's ok to protest the war but it is not ok to degrade the men and women all over the world that protect our freedoms. Maybe Gonzalez should go back and hide in his "neighborhood in Puerto Rico" if he doesn't appreciate the sacrifices that people in the armed forces have made for years.
I don't know you so I won't stereotype you like you did to Pat Tillman. It says your a graduate student at UMASS but you're article shows you have no education or class whatsoever. People like you are a disgrace to any society. Honor, courage, and bravery are just words to people like you. To people like Pat Tillman, Honor, Courage, and Bravery is how they live their lives. |
