I was looking to develop a way to "ping" remote machines from a C# app a few months ago and I found a solution online that seems to be the popular solution (various versions of this).

That solution was very inconsistent & never seemed to give the exact results I was looking for. So instead I wrote a Ping method in C# that just captures the command line output:

public bool IsConnectable(string hostName, int numPingAttempts, int timeout, out string result){
      try{
         System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo psi = new System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo("ping"," -n " + numPingAttempts.ToString() + " -w " + timeout + " " + hostName);

         psi.RedirectStandardOutput = true;
         psi.UseShellExecute = false;
         psi.WindowStyle = System.Diagnostics.ProcessWindowStyle.Hidden;
         System.Diagnostics.Process proc = System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(psi);
         result = proc.StandardOutput.ReadToEnd();
         proc.Dispose();

         if(result.IndexOf("TTL=") > -1){
            return true;
         } else {
            return false;
         }
      } catch(Exception ex){
         result = "Error in Ping Code: " + ex.Message + ex.StackTrace;
      }
      return false;
}

[See the Myth-TV post by Jerry]

I really think this is a lot closer to what I've been looking for. I am currently using Comcast's DVR but I find it lacking. The best feature to me (meaning my DVR doesn't have it but should) is the ability to remotely set up the recordings. This means that I can access my home computer from work when I find out that I'm going to be staying in DC till late (or b/c I'm a moron and just plain forgot). That's pretty keen.

It looks like Bush may finally be ready to fire back after taking non-stop criticism these past 3 months. This should build momentum as we get closer to the nailbiting November conclusion of Bush vs. Kucinich '04!

The president gave a speech for the Republican Governors Association recently and I found a few quotes particularly good (quotes courtesy of cnn.com) :

#1

Bush called his Democratic challengers "an interesting group with diverse opinions -- for tax cuts and against them; for NAFTA and against NAFTA; for the Patriot Act and against the Patriot Act; in favor of liberating Iraq and opposed to it."

"And that's just one senator from Massachusetts," he said, a pointed reference to the Democratic front-runner, Sen. John Kerry.

#2

Speaking of his Democratic critics, Bush also said, "They now agree that the world is better off with Saddam [Hussein] out of power. They just didn't support removing Saddam from power."

"Maybe they were hoping he'd lose the next Iraqi election."

Bull also said he may be shipping out to Illinois in 2 weeks, so I say we organize something before he goes, maybe 25c wing night at Hard Times next Wednesday?

I'll take special care in the future not to misspell "lube" or "trunk butt" so as not to raise Nate's ire.

I haven't decided whether to allow them to appear in searches, but they will probably not.

Remember, Shiny Donkey is a family site -- albeit one with numerous fallic pictures of Bull.

The folks at Insight Mag report that John Kerry is 6'4". This makes him the tallest of the 2004 Democratic hopefuls and proves Alex's theory right: John Kerry really is a tall drink of water.

Interesting sidenote: Kucinich is 3'2"

I think all celebrities sould visit foreign countries & endorse political candidates, especially ones they have a vague peripheral knowledge of.

But then, anyone's better than Bush, right? I mean, all he cares about is trading blood for oil & screwing the poor. And he not only ran from Vietnam by serving in the National Guard, but he indisputably played hooky from that duty. Notice I didn't say "allegedly played hooky", as in "Osama Bin Laden is allegedly a terrorist," -- the hearsay I've heard on the 24 hour news networks has convinced me that Bush was AWOL, period.
